Limescale reduces the performance of your washing machine  and can clog the pipes if it is not cleaned regularly. Cleaning products are much less effective, so you will need to use more to achieve the same cleaning results.

Clothes washed in a machine with accumulated limescale will not have the same softness, plus the machine  will use more energy to operate.
