Silverfish, also known as Lepisma saccharina, are small, silvery, elongated insects that feed on organic materials such as paper, cardboard, fabric and glue.

They are found in damp environments such as kitchens, bathrooms and basements. They are often considered household pests because they can damage archives, books and clothes in our closets. But what do these little silent invaders hate? And how do they decide to settle in?

Silverfish are born through a process of incomplete metamorphosis, meaning their wings and genitals gradually develop throughout their adult lives.

The larval stage lasts several months, during which the Lepisma saccharina undergoes several molts.

To get rid of silverfish, you can use several methods:
Reduce humidity – These insects thrive in humid environments, so it is important to keep the humidity in your home to a minimum. You can use dehumidifiers or air out your home regularly to remove humidity.

Cleaning – Cleaning your home regularly is a good way to prevent Lepisma saccharina infestation. It is also good to regularly remove food scraps and trash and clean kitchen and bathroom surfaces with products containing boric acid or ammonia.

Traps – Sticky or food traps can be used to catch silverfish. Therefore, it is good to place the traps where silverfish are most often observed.
