4. Blot the stained area with a damp cloth or sponge to remove as much of the moisture as possible. Do not rub, as this can spread the stain and odor.
5. Apply a mixture of warm water and mild dish detergent to the area, gently working it into the fabric with a soft brush or cloth. Avoid using too much water to prevent soaking the cushions.
6. Once you've treated the area with soapy water, blot it again with a clean, wet cloth to rinse, then with a dry cloth to soak up the excess moisture.
7. To neutralize and deodorize the smell, sprinkle the affected area with baking soda. If the upholstery fabric is color-safe, you can also mix baking soda with a small amount of white vinegar to form a paste, then apply it to the stain. Allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes.
8. After the baking soda has had time to absorb the odors, vacuum the area thoroughly.
9. If the odor persists, consider using a commercial enzyme cleaner designed for pet accidents. These products break down the proteins in feces that cause lingering smells and are typically safe for use on upholstered furniture.
10. Test a hidden area of the sofa with the enzyme cleaner first to ensure it does not discolor or damage the fabric.
11. Apply the enzyme cleaner according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually by spraying it on the affected area and allowing it to sit for a specified period.
