Making cheese at home might sound complicated, but it’s actually quite simple, especially when you don’t need any special ingredients like rennet. All you need is milk, a few common kitchen tools, and a bit of patience. Here’s a friendly guide to making your own delicious cheese at home.
Ingredients
- 1 gallon of whole milk (preferably not ultra-pasteurized)
- 1/4 cup white vinegar or lemon juice
- Salt (to taste)
Equipment
- A large pot
- A thermometer (optional but helpful)
- A colander
- Cheesecloth or a clean dish towel
- A large bowl
Instructions
1. Heat the Milk
Pour the milk into a large pot and slowly heat it over medium heat. Stir occasionally to prevent the milk from scorching. If you have a thermometer, aim for a temperature of about 180°F (82°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, heat the milk until it’s hot but not boiling—small bubbles should form around the edges.
