But my spouse Sam isn’t as excited as I am. His inability to comprehend my fixation with what he terms « hoarder junk » belies his greatness as a kind and diligent guy. Regardless, I still won’t give up my pastime, even if it’s the only subject we ever disagree on. I love nothing more than packing a little bag and going to a flea market in the hopes of finding a priceless gem.Something extraordinary occurred recently that changed Sam’s viewpoint completely. Going to a neighboring town’s street fair on a Saturday morning brought back a similar sensation of exhilaration for me around a month ago. Following my gut, I found a little booth where a guy was peddling a variety of trinkets. A little enameled egg, about the size of a genuine egg, was found by me among the porcelain cups and figurines. I was captivated by it even though it didn’t have much visual appeal. Curious, I inquired about the pricing with the vendor. After taking stock of my situation, he proclaimed it a steal for $25. To his disappointment, I responded with $5, knowing how these kinds of trades work. I was happy with my catch as I walked away with the egg after we compromised on $10 after some bargaining. Sam was unimpressed when I brought it home to show him. With suspicion, he looked down at the egg and saw the « Made in Hong Kong » stamp. He made fun of me for spending too much for yet another piece of crap while laughing. However, I detected the rattling of an inside object when I shook the egg. Curious, Sam grabbed the egg and, twisting it firmly, cracked it open. There was a little package inside, wrapped in scarlet silk.A set of beautiful earrings was discovered when we cautiously removed the package from its packaging. Even though I thought they were only costume jewelry at first, Sam had suspicions. The fact that genuine diamonds do not get fogged up when inhaled was something he recalled seeing in a documentary. The earrings’ clear center stones were certified to pass. Sam was certain that they were real, so we took them to a jeweler to get their opinion. The mall jeweler verified the earrings’ authenticity as diamonds encircled by emeralds in 18-carat white gold. His best guess was that they were worth at least $300,000. We were taken aback. Ultimately, the earrings fetched three million dollars at auction, proving that the jeweler’s estimate was significantly short. Our lives were forever altered by this unforeseen fortune. Our new house now has a cozy nest egg, and the porcelain egg is proudly displayed on the fireplace. Despite his earlier derision of my interest in antique hunting, Sam is now a dedicated fan of the pastime. As a couple, we keep going to antique fairs and flea markets in the hopes of finding something really special.
