The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

The human body naturally produces mucus to lubricate and protect the throat and sinuses. However, when this production becomes excessive, it can indicate the presence of an ongoing infection, acid reflux, or inflammation. This phenomenon leads to unpleasant sensations in the throat, such as discomfort or the feeling of mucus going down from the nose to the throat. Unfortunately, medications often only treat the symptoms, without addressing the root of the problem. Here are the main causes of this mucus buildup, as well as natural solutions to remedy it.

1. Acid reflux
The most common yet often undiagnosed cause of excess mucus is acid reflux. This occurs when the valve at the top of the stomach does not close properly, allowing stomach acid to back up into the esophagus, up into the throat. While this acid is essential for digestion, it damages tissues when it reaches areas like the throat or sinuses, causing inflammation. To defend itself, the body produces mucus to protect these damaged areas. This acid reflux may be accompanied by heartburn, but in many cases, only the symptoms related to the mucus appear, a condition called silent reflux or gastrolaryngeal reflux (GLR).

Natural solution:
Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink this preparation twice a day before meals. This helps close the stomach valve and reduce reflux. If after a week, the mucus decreases, this indicates that acid reflux was probably the cause.

2. Antacid medications.
