A broken key stuck in a lock can be a frustrating situation. Before you call a locksmith, try these tricks to remove the broken key without disassembling the entire lock.

Trick 1: Use a Strong Magnet

If the key is stuck in a vertical position, a strong magnet can help.

  • Steps:
    1. Apply a small amount of lubricating product around the key.
    2. Take the magnet and place it against the key.
    3. The key should adhere to the magnet and come out easily.

Trick 2: Needle-Nose Pliers or Thin-Tipped Scissors

If you have access to needle-nose pliers or thin-tipped scissors, you can gently pull the broken key.

  • Steps:
    1. Lubricate the area around the key.
    2. Carefully grab the exposed end of the key with the pliers or scissors.
    3. Pull gently and slowly. Avoid using excessive force to prevent pushing the key further into the lock.

Trick 3: Use Another Key (with Door Open)

If the door is still open, you can use another key to help push the broken key out.

  • Steps:
    1. Look for a key with a very thin tip.
    2. From the inside of the house, insert the tip of the other key into the lock until it contacts the broken key.
    3. Push inward to help the broken key come out.
