  1. Underlying health problems: when to consult?

Thyroid disorders:

Brittle nails may be a sign of  thyroid dysfunction . If this is accompanied by other symptoms such as  persistent fatigue  or  weight changes , see your doctor for a checkup.

Psoriasis and fungal infections:

Psoriasis doesn’t just affect the skin: your nails can also be affected.  Pitting ,  streaking , thickening… These symptoms should alert you. Similarly,  fungal infections  can make your nails brittle and discolored. In these cases, appropriate treatment is essential.

  1. Physical trauma: your nails are not tools!

Do you tend to use your nails to  open boxes  or  scratch hard surfaces  ? This type of action can weaken them in the long term. Keep them short,  file them regularly  and avoid roughing them up.
