Imagine: you are driving along quietly, and suddenly a car comes from the opposite direction, straight at you. A collision seems inevitable. What should you do? Should you brake sharply, try to avoid the impact, or hope that the other driver reacts in time?
This type of situation is one of the most dangerous scenarios on the road. However, there are simple but essential reflexes that can make all the difference.
Anticipate: the key to avoiding accidents
Head-on accidents often occur due to miscalculation when overtaking or reduced visibility . However, the majority of them could be avoided with just one golden rule: anticipate .
Before any maneuver, ask yourself these three questions:
- Do I have sufficient visibility? A curve, a hilltop or unfavourable weather conditions should dissuade you from overtaking.
- Can I safely complete my overtaking? If you are unsure, the answer is no.
- How will the driver I’m overtaking react? Some accelerate suddenly, making the situation even riskier.
Essential tip: Before overtaking, always identify an emergency route . Is there an exit on the side of the road in case of a problem?
