How long after the expiry date can you consume a yogurt?

What are the risks of eating an out-of-date yogurt?

In the majority of cases, eating an expired yogurt without any sign of deterioration is safe. However, in some situations, this can cause:

  • Digestive disorders: Blounts, nausea or diarrhoea if the yogurt contains undesirable bacteria.
  • Food poisoning: Rare but possible if pathogenic bacteria such as salmonella or listeria have developed.

Fragile people (pregnant women, children, elderly or immunocompromised people) should be more cautious and avoid too old yogurt.

How can you avoid wasting your yogurts?

Food waste is a major problem, and simple gestures make it possible to avoid throwing away yogurts that are still consumable.

  • Store your yoghurts correctly: Always in the coldest part of the refrigerator (about 4oC), away from the door where the temperature varies.
  • Eat them in the right order: Put the oldest yogurts in front to eat first.
  • Integrate them into recipes: A yogurt close to its date can be used in cakes, sauces, smoothies or marinades.

Anti-waste trick: Do you have an excess of yogurt to eat quickly? Freeze them. They’ll lose a little texture, but will be perfect for homemade ice cream or smoothies.
