For years, e-cigarettes have been presented as a less harmful alternative to tobacco. Yet British researchers have just thrown a pavement into the pond: according to their first results, vaping could have health effects just as alarming as tobacco. So, do we have to worry?
Intensive use and substances with unrecognised effects
Unlike traditional cigarettes, which are lit and then switched off, the vape is often used continuously, sometimes without even noticing. Some vapers chain puffs throughout the day, increasing their exposure to the chemicals in the steam. Among them: artificial flavourings, solvents such as propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, but also metals from the resistance of the device. The long-term impact of these compounds remains largely unknown.
