One evening, I went home early and I finally learned where the meals had passed.
When Randy came down rubbing his eyes like a man who had just woken up from a peaceful nap, I was still standing in the kitchen.
“What’s going on? “, he asked, frowning in front of the refrigerator, which is now half empty.
Without saying a word, I wielded my phone, re-emitting the video.

“Why? I asked, the voice trembling. “Why did you let him do that?” ”
“She needed help,” he muttered, avoiding my gaze. “It’s just food, Doris. Why are you making a big fuss about it? ”
“JUST OF FOOD?” My laughter was hollow. “Let me tell you what it means ‘just food’, Randy. It means getting up at 5 a.m. to prepare meals before my service. It means spending my weekends planning the menus and shopping. It means –“
“For the love of God,” he interrupted me, “you act as if I had committed a crime. ”

I looked at him staring, with disbelief turning into fury. “Do you at least hear?” For months, I thought I was going crazy, wondering where all the food was going, blaming myself for not cooking enough. And all this time, you were giving her as if it didn’t mean anything. ”
“You don’t think you’re exaggerating?” “,” said he, “tone sharp now.” “That’s my sister, Doris. What was I supposed to do? Say no? ”
“YES. I exploded. “That’s exactly what you should have done. ”
His silence was deafening.

“You know what hurts the most? “I whispered. “You didn’t even ask me for my opinion. You just decided that my time, my efforts, didn’t mean anything. ”
“That’s not true,” he protested. “I appreciate everything you do-“
“No,” I interrupted him. “Achering is not about taking it without asking. That’s not lying. It’s not making me look crazy. ”
“You are making yourself a mountain of a molehill, Doris. Let go of me a little. Oh, by the way, what did you plan to cook for dinner? ”
What audacity.

“Very good,” I cracked. “From now on, you’re doing it by yourself.” If you touch anything I cook, I’ll buy a locked refrigerator. And if you want me to consider forgiving you, you’ll have to cook for ME every day for a year. ”
Randy’s face is twisted with disbelief. “You’re ridiculous. ”
“Really?” I replied by grab my handbag. “Well, let’s see how ridiculous I’ll feel tomorrow.” Good luck, Chief Randy. ”
For two days, Randy tried to save appearances. He ordered takeaway dishes, carefully prepared them and claimed that they were homemade. I was not fooled.

“It’s not going to work,” I said, pushing back a plate of lasagna that is obviously bought in the trade.
“I’m trying, you know. “,” he protested. “Isn’t it worth something?” ”
“Try would have been to respect me in the first place,” I replied calmly.
On the third day, I understood the truth: I was not his wife. I was his maid, his cook and his practical solution.
This awareness has stung me. But she also freed me.
When I called Ellie and Jonah to tell them that I was leaving Randy, their reactions were exactly the reactions I was expecting.

“Mom,” said Jonah, the loud voice of disbelief, “are you divorced because of food?” “
“It’s not just food,” I said, pointing the phone firmly.
“But mom,” he persisted, “Do you remember all these family dinners?” The Thanksgiving where dad burned the turkey and where we ordered a pizza? These moments mean something. ”
Ellie intervened, the frustration bubbling through his words. “Mom, you’ve been together for 25 years. That must count on something. Can’t you fix things? Dad loves you… he’s just a little unconscious sometimes. ”
“Unconscious?” I repeated,” I repeated. “Is that what we call deliberate deception now? ”
Silence.

I took a great breath and stabilized my voice. “Listen to me.” You didn’t see his face when I showed him this video. He didn’t apologize, didn’t feel bad. He acted as if I was crazy about being upset. It’s not just a matter of food… it’s a matter of respect. ”
“But–” started Jonah, but I interrupted him.
“Do you know how hurtful it is to feel invisible?” To realize that the person you trusted the most does not value you or your time? I spent years putting everyone first, and I’m tired. I deserve better. ”
“Mom,” said Ellie softly, “when you say it that way. I remember you prepared my favorite cheese macaroni every time I was sad. It wasn’t just food either, was it? ”
Silence fills the line again before Ellie ends up saying, ‘I… I understand, mom. I don’t like that, but I understand. ”
“Me too,” muttered Jonas reluctantly. “Just… do what you have to do.”

A week later, I packed my bags.
“Are you leaving?” “Adved Randy, his voice being panicked. “Because of that?” Doris, please… we can fix things. ”
“I’m done,” I said just. “I deserve better. ”
“And everything we’ve built? “he argued. “Twenty-five years, Doris. Are you throwing it away because of the leftovers? ”
I turned around to face him one last time. “No, Randy. You threw it away. One container at a time. Oh, by the way, they weren’t leftovers. They were toasted people in my love and devotion. We’re going to court. Goodbye. ”

The months have passed, and I have begun to rebuild myself after the divorce. Therapy. New hobbies. Long walks where I had no accountability to anyone.
Then, one day, my phone drummed with a message from May:
“Hey, Doris. I just wanted you to know that Randy asked me to help him with meals. At first, I said yes, but now I understand. It is impossible. Sorry about everything. ”
I fixed the message for a long time before laughing. Of course, Randy had coiled her. And of course, it had also reached its limit.
Now, I keep May’s video wrapping her pink tote as a reminder. Whenever doubt creeps in, and whenever I wonder if I have not been too hard or if I have not been too quick to leave, I shall re-enter it. It reminds me that I deserve better.
