Did you know that your refrigerator has an often misunderstood button that can reduce your energy costs? With judicious tuning, especially in winter, you could save valuable euros while preserving the quality of your food.
Why your refrigerator consumes so much
The refrigerator operates continuously, 24 hours a day, and is one of the most energy-intensive appliances in the house. With an average consumption of 50 to 75 kWh per month, it closely follows the water heater and the electric cook in terms of consumption. However, it is possible to reduce this impact with a few simple adjustments.
Winter mode button setting: a little-known trick
The cooler ambient temperatures in winter make it possible to reduce the intensity of the cooling without compromising the preservation of the food. Most refrigerators have a button or control panel to adjust the internal temperature between 1 and 5 (or 1 and 6 depending on the model).
Here's how to do it:
- In winter: Set the level to 2 or 3, or even 1 if the refrigerator is not loaded. This will maintain an ideal temperature between 2 and 5oC, sufficient to store food while reducing consumption.
- In summer or in case of significant storage : Increase the level to prevent deterioration of food, especially in the freezer compartment, which must remain at -18 oC for sensitive products such as meat or fish.
