1. Prepare the Pan:
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with butter to prevent the taffy from sticking.
2. Combine Ingredients:
In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir to combine, then place the pan over medium heat.
Stir the mixture until the sugar has dissolved completely.
3. Boil the Mixture:
Once the sugar is dissolved, let the mixture come to a boil. Do not stir it while it’s boiling.
Continue boiling the mixture until it reaches 270°F (132°C) on a candy thermometer. This is the “soft crack” stage, which is ideal for taffy.
4. Add Kool-Aid Flavor:
Once the mixture reaches the correct temperature, remove the pan from the heat.
Stir in the Kool-Aid packet, butter, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until the Kool-Aid is fully dissolved, and the mixture turns a vibrant color.
5. Pour the Taffy:
Carefully pour the hot taffy mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Be cautious, as it will be very hot.
6. Let it Cool:
Allow the taffy to cool for about 5 minutes until it’s cool enough to handle but still pliable.
7. Stretch and Pull:
Once the taffy is cool enough to touch, butter your hands lightly and begin pulling the taffy. Stretch it and fold it over itself repeatedly for about 10-15 minutes until it becomes glossy and chewy.
You can divide the taffy into smaller portions and stretch them into ropes or simply pull it into a large sheet and cut it into small squares.
8. Wrap and Serve:
Once the taffy is at the desired texture, cut it into bite-sized pieces.
Wrap each piece in wax paper or parchment paper to keep it fresh and prevent it from sticking together.
Tips:
Flavor Variations: Try using different Kool-Aid flavors to create a rainbow of taffy! You can mix and match flavors for even more variety.
Storage: Store the wrapped taffy in an airtight container at room temperature. It will stay fresh for up to 2 weeks.
Temperature Check: Be sure to use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature carefully. If the taffy reaches too high a temperature, it can become hard instead of chewy.
Kool-Aid Taffy is a fun and creative candy treat that’s perfect for kids, parties, or just a sweet indulgence. The colorful, fruity flavors will brighten up your day and satisfy any sweet tooth!
