What causes hearing loss?

Hearing loss may be derived from a variety of factors, including:

  1. Age-related hearing loss (presbyacousy): A gradual decline in hearing with age.
  2. Noise-induced hearing loss: Damage caused by prolonged exposure to loud sounds.
  3. Cerumen accumulation: An excess of ear wax can block the ear canal and smother the sound.
  4. Infections or inflammation: Conditions such as otitis media (ear infection) may temporarily affect hearing.
  5. Inner ear injuries: Problems with the cochlea or auditory nerve can lead to permanent hearing loss.

Although some causes of hearing loss are reversible (e.g. earwax accumulation or infections), others require professional medical intervention.
