House spiders: why shouldn't we kill them?

The spider is often unloved, and one in four Frenchman confesses to being afraid of it. When one of them ventures into our living room, the temptation to get rid of them is strong. However, is it really sensible to kill these spiders who are living with us? Behind their unattractive appearance, these little creatures play an important role, both in our homes and in our gardens.

The spider, a healthy house sign
Spiders often bear witness to a healthy environment. In gardens, the more pollution an area is, the more it attracts spiders, which are large consumers of biodiversity. Indoors, they help to get rid of insects such as flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches and cockroaches. Thus, their presence is generally beneficial.

House spiders in France prefer temperate and ventilated areas. They avoid places that are too confined, too hot or too damp. Their installation in a house can therefore be seen as an index of air quality and general conditions of the habitat.

Spiders, alloys against insect pests
With more than 1,600 species in France, spiders are ubiquitous and useful. On average, they capture the equivalent of one ton of insects per year per hectare. Arachnids turn out to be very effective predators, helping to limit insect populations, especially in our gardens.
