Using newsprint in your backyard: an environmentally friendly solution to remove weeds

2. How to implement this method

To get the best results with newsprint, here's a step-by-step guide:

2.1 Soil preparation

Before spreading out the newsprint, start by preparing the ground:

  • Manually weed the targeted area to remove weeds already present.
  • Remove any stone or obstacle that may cause the display of the paper.
  • Lightly flatten the ground to create a uniform surface.

2.2 Choice of newsprint

It is important to carefully select the type of paper used:

  • Preference should be given to black-and-white newspapers: The inks used in these sections are generally plant-based and do not contain heavy metals or other toxic substances.
  • Avoid coloured or shiny sections, as they may contain chemical compounds that are potentially harmful to soil and plants.

2.3 Installation of newsprint

Follow these steps to apply the newsprint correctly:

  1. Tear the leaves into pieces that are suitable for the size of your space. You can also cut them according to your needs.
  2. Lightly moisten the leaves before placing them on the floor. This holds them in place and facilitates their adherence to the ground.
  3. Form a layer of 3 to 4 thicknesses of paper around the plants. Make sure the edges overlap to prevent wedding rings from entering.
  4. Leave enough space around the stems of the plants so as not to smother them.

2.4 Covering newsprint

To complete the installation and improve the aesthetics of your garden, cover the newsprint with a thin layer of mulching material:

  • Organic mulches (wood chips, bark, hay)
  • Land-made or compost
  • Cut grass recovered after mowing

This cover protects newsprint from the weather, prevents it from flying away and adds a decorative touch to your garden.
