Tartar, also called dental tartar, is a hardened form of dental plaque that can form on the teeth and under the gums. It is caused by the accumulation of minerals from saliva on dental plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. If the plaque is not removed regularly by brushing and the use of the dental floss, it hardens and turns into scale. Tartar not only causes unsightly spots on the teeth, but also contributes to gum disease and caries. The rough surface of the scale facilitates the adhesion of the plate, creating a vicious circle of accumulation.
