According to Statista, about 17 million trees in the United States would be needed to compensate for annual Canadian imports of timber. The President, however, assured that this abundant resource on American soil would be enough:
“We have the best wood. Why should we buy timber from other countries, the duty payer, the payer of extraordinary prices, when we have our own forests? ”
The American Forest Resource Council welcomed the decision in a statement:
“These executive decrees state the obvious, but provide the clarity and leadership that previous administrations have not been able to say loud and clear: US wood products must come from America. ”
However, several environmental experts are concerned about this measure, fearing that it will lead to the felling of the tree mass and the negative impact on the environment. It remains to be seen what the real repercussions of this policy will have in the coming months.
