Greg did not respond immediately. The weight of his paycheck, freshly cashed and tidy in the pocket of his coat, seemed heavier than usual. He had already seen unlucky people in the city, and all too often he had bowed against their demands.

Yet there was something authentic and different in her tone and in the way she held the child carefully wrapped, which seemed to be no more than three years old. With a sigh, Greg decided to do something he rarely did: he stepped forward.

“Very good. Let’s start by giving you something to eat,” he said, surprised by his own words. Her face was relieved, and she acquiesced. In spite of him, Greg decided to help him.

They headed to a small café nearby.

“Order what you want,” said Greg. “Don’t worry. ”

Greg smiles. “Pleased to meet you both. My name is Greg. He waved to the waiter, ordering for him, Lily and his son, even though he wasn’t particularly hungry.

Lily hesitated, glancing at her son, who happily ended the whipped cream and the fruits of a bowl.

“At home, I hope. It was… a difficult time. She had a hard time finding her words, her gaze falling on her hands.

“I don’t have my phone or my wallet. I didn’t want to find myself here, blocked. My plan collapsed, and suddenly I had nothing left. ”

Greg acquiesces. “It looks hard. Are you sure it’ll be okay once you get home? ”
