The ankle bracelet is also mentioned in some accounts of the Thousand and One Nights, where it was associated, according to interpretations, with prostitutes and homosexual women in some parts of the Arab world. This perception, although widespread, remains open to debate among historians.
Sumerians and Romans: an external sign of wealth
Among the Sumerians, as later among the Romans, the ankle bracelet was above all a marker of wealth. Made of gold or silver, it testified to the fortune and social rank of the woman who carried it. In some cultures, it was even offered as a wedding gift, thus representing a promise of financial security.
