During the week, you want to relax after work or have other obligations, so some household tasks have to wait until the weekend. Whether it is a washing machine, a vacuum cleaner or a lawnmower, given that the household is often associated with a certain level of noise, the question arises as to whether it is really permissible to expect such domestic noises from its peers on Sunday.
What can and can't you do on Sunday?
This article explains what noises and activities – especially in a residential building – are prohibited during quiet hours and what things you are allowed to do despite the days off.
Moreover, the general framework for rest periods is provided for by the German law of the lease, to which many owners have adapted their internal rest periods with derogations of one to two hours. These are:
On Sundays and public holidays, a rest period throughout the day must be observed.
During the week, there is a night's rest from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
At the national level, there is no law on midday rest, but a quiet period from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. may be prescribed at the municipal level.

Just like vacuuming or “carrying” the balcony, it is also forbidden to mow the lawn during quiet hours. As a general rule, no loud noise can be made in the garden or on the balcony on Sundays. In this case, if someone complains to the owner or the police, the city may face a fine that is not too low – up to EUR 5 000, depending on the magnitude of the noise.
Robotic lawnmowers, although often do not exceed the sound limit of 59 decibels, can still only be used on weekdays. However, ongoing legal proceedings must determine whether robots are still considered to be “mowers” or whether special regulation is possible...
