My Mother Steps In
“I’d love to hear why you think my daughter should pay for your choices.”
My mother, Miriam, stepped forward, her voice smooth but dangerous. She calmly sipped her tea as if she had all the time in the world.
“This isn’t your concern, Miriam,” Sylvia snapped.
“Oh, but it is,” my mother said. “Because you seem to think my daughter owes you something.”
Sylvia scoffed. “She should have covered everything. It’s her wedding. And let’s not forget—my son is paying for most of this wedding. That should count for something.”
I was speechless. But my mother? She was ready.
“So let me get this straight,” she said. “You voluntarily got your hair and makeup done. You accepted my daughter’s generosity without issue. And now, on her wedding day, you throw a bill at her?”
Sylvia’s lips pressed into a thin line. “She should show some respect.”
My mother let out a soft laugh. “Respect is earned, Sylvia. And right now, you’re doing a fine job of losing it.”
Setting Boundaries
Then my mother turned to me. “Darling, what do you think?”
I took a deep breath and lifted my chin. “I think I will not be paying this bill.”
Sylvia’s face turned red. “You ungrateful little—”
“Careful,” my mother warned, voice icy. “Very. Careful.”
I stepped forward. “Let’s be clear, Sylvia. I love your son. But if you think you can manipulate me or throw tantrums to get your way, you’re mistaken. This isn’t about money. It’s about boundaries. And I’m setting mine now.”
For the first time, Sylvia looked genuinely uncertain. Maybe she had expected me to cave. Not today.
A knock at the door broke the tension.
“Five minutes!” the wedding coordinator called.
Sylvia turned on her heel and stormed out. My mother, completely unfazed, picked up her tea again. My bridesmaids sat frozen before Marissa finally whispered, “Your mom is a legend.”
I laughed, shaking off the tension. Today was my wedding day—and no one was going to ruin it.
