1. Gastric reflux
The most common, but often undiagnosed, cause of excess mucus is gastric reflux. It occurs when the valve at the top of the stomach does not close properly, allowing the gastric acid to rise in the oesophagus and throat. This acid reflux can be followed by heartburn, but in many cases only mucus-related symptoms appear, a condition called gastrolaryngeal reflux (LMR).

Natural solution:
Mix 2 tablespoons of cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink this preparation twice a day before meals. This promotes the closure of the gastric valve and reduces reflux. If, after one week, mucus decreases, this means that acid reflux is probably the cause.

2. Antiacid medicinal products

Many people, especially those over 40 years of age, use antacids or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to treat their reflux. However, these medicines only relieve gastric acid, thus exacerbating the long-term problem.

Natural solution:
Apply cider vinegar as mentioned above and consider taking 5 to 10 betaine hydrochloride capsules before meals to help with digestion and stimulate the gastric valve.
