The reason why you should always place a coin in your freezer

Here's how to do it:
  1. Fill a cup with water (a standard glass is perfectly suitable).
  2. Place it in the freezer until the water is completely frozen.
  3. Then place one coin (e.g. 1 or 2 euro cents) on the top of the ice.
  4. Put the cup back in the freezer... and leave it there.

How does it work?

The part functions as a discrete indicator. If you go home and the room is still on the surface or just in the middle, everything is fine: the temperature has remained low enough. On the other hand, if it fell to the bottom of the cup, it means that all the ice has melted at some point, so that your food has also thawed. In this case, it is more prudent to throw away sensitive foods, even if they still appear to be frozen.
