Then, out of the blue, Kelly returned to her mother’s life. She had matured, obtained an accounting degree, and secured a lucrative position. But her father had not had a good life. Over time, his once-vast fortune had diminished. He eventually depleted all of his resources, including the money he had saved for Kelly’s college, after losing his job and getting sued. The mother selected Laura, her goddaughter, as the main beneficiary in her will. Throughout her darkest moments, Laura had been a constant source of comfort and stability. Over the years, Laura was the one who supported and comforted the woman when she felt abandoned by her own family. The woman believed Laura’s devotion and assistance should be acknowledged because she had been like a daughter to her.
