My daughter-in-law treats me like her servant, so I decided to teach her a lesson this Christmas

I was a little shocked. Normally Eve and I went shopping together – but this was the first time she dictated it to me.

And then it became clear to me: the longer I stayed with Connor and Eve, the less I was a guest in the house and the more I was servant in the household.

Instead of getting upset myself above everything, I wanted to teach Eve a lesson. Since I came from a large family, I always knew how to cook and feed many people.

Fast forward for Christmas dinner – the house is now filled with the scent of delicious food, enough that the water in one’s mouth runs together. I put everything into this meal. From the recipes to the ingredients to the careful details that were incorporated into each dish, I wanted to express love in the dishes I prepared.

Later, the guests came and started to nibble on the appetizers and the mulled wine that I had brought with me. Then we went to dinner and the compliments started to stream.

“Aunt Lucy,” shouted one of Connor’s girlfriends. “This food is fantastic! Have you cooked everything yourself?”

“I did it, Ross,” I replied proudly to myself.

I watched as Connor was beaming about every compliment I received. He seemed to be happy that his mother was there and wanted to provide him and his guests with food. And in my own way I was satisfied. It was the first Christmas without Ron and it was difficult.

The cooking distracted me from my own thoughts to it.

What about Eve? The poor thing seemed to look at me differently afterwards. She finally understood that I was more than someone she could trust in her household chores.

“Lucy,” she said, taking the cranberry sauce. “I doubted that you would prepare so many delicious things!”

“Thank you, Eve,” I replied, just grateful that the day was almost over and everything seemed to be going according to plan.

After dinner, Eve and I were busy cleaning up while Connor had the guests in the living room. I looked at Eve; his face was full of envy.

The thing is, I could understand that. If my guests had enjoyed the food in my house, I would have wished for a compliment. But that was not the case, because Eve let me do it all.

“Lucy, can we talk?” she asked me.

“Of course,” I answered. “What’s your head, treasure?”

She smiled at the name.
