Where do the white traces sometimes found on women's underwear come from?

It's a bit like patina on an old copper saucepan: it proves that it's used, it's useful, and it works well.

What should alert you (and what should not)

These whitish markings are not of concern per se. They do not require any particular treatment or cleaning. However, if other symptoms occur, medical consultation may be necessary.

Be careful if you notice:

  • Unusual, sour or unpleasant odour
  • Losses of a strange colour (green, grey, intense yellow...)
  • Itching, burning or irritation feelings

These signs may indicate bacterial vaginosis, fungal infection or other imbalances that a professional will be able to diagnose.

How do you take care of your vaginal flora?

It's very simple: the less it is, the better.
The vagina cleans itself: useless (and even risky) to wash it from the inside. This could disturb the balance of its protective flora.

The right steps to be taken:

  • Clean only the outer area (the vulva) with warm water and a mild soap, without scent
  • Avoid wipes, sprays or antiseptics
  • Wear cotton underwear, breathable, and change panties every day
  • Prefer clothing not too tight to avoid maceration

It's kind of like a good cheese: it needs its ferments to maintain its quality. The vagina has its good bacteria.

A body that speaks: know how to listen without alarm

The menstrual cycle influences the nature and amount of vaginal discharge. They are more abundant around ovulation, and can also vary depending on emotions, diet or certain treatments. The most important thing is to know your body, to note what is usual, and to spot what is common.
