1. Choose the Right Container
Airtight containers are essential. Use glass jars, food-grade plastic bins, or metal canisters with tight-fitting lids.
Avoid storing rice in its original plastic packaging for long periods, as it’s not airtight.
2. Store in a Cool, Dry Place
Keep rice in a pantry, cupboard, or basement where the temperature stays below 75°F (24°C) and humidity is low.
Avoid areas near stoves or dishwashers where heat and moisture are more common.
3. Freeze Rice Before Storing
For extra protection, especially from insect eggs (like pantry moths), freeze rice for 3–5 days after purchase.
Let it return to room temperature before placing it in your container to avoid moisture buildup.
4. Add Natural Repellents
To prevent insect infestation:
Place a bay leaf or garlic clove inside the container. Their strong scent helps deter pests.
You can also use food-grade diatomaceous earth (1 tsp per pound of rice) to ward off bugs safely.
5. Avoid Moisture
Moisture is the main cause of mold growth. Never use wet spoons or let condensation enter the container.
Ensure the rice is completely cool and dry before sealing if you’ve cooked or handled it.
6. Rotate Stock
