Why does mold form in the shower?
Mold in the shower is primarily caused by the warm, moist environment that creates ideal conditions for fungus and bacteria to thrive. The hot water used in the shower creates water vapor that condenses on cold surfaces, such as tile and grout. This moisture buildup, combined with the presence of organic debris such as soap, shampoo, and skin cells, provides food for mold spores. Additionally, poor ventilation in most bathrooms prevents moisture from dissipating quickly, creating a constantly humid environment. Without regular cleaning and proper ventilation, mold can quickly grow.
How to remove mold
Citric acid
The first thing to do is dissolve 150 grams of citric acid in a liter of water and add the spoonful of hydrogen peroxide. Pour it on a rag and apply it as a compress on the areas to be cleaned. Leave it to act for 10 minutes and then rub away any residue.
Hydrogen peroxide and borax
Another powerful shower mold remedy is to use hydrogen peroxide and borax. Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching and disinfecting agent that, when combined with borax, a natural mineral with antifungal properties, forms a highly effective solution. To begin, make a solution by mixing 2 cups of warm water with ¼ cup of borax, making sure the borax dissolves completely. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and add 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Shake the bottle well to mix the ingredients. Spray the solution generously on the moldy areas of the shower and let it sit for at least an hour. Rinse and dry the entire shower.
Tea tree oil
This oil is a great option for those looking for a natural method that doesn’t use harsh chemicals. To use tea tree oil, start by mixing 1 teaspoon of tea tree essential oil with 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle well to ensure the oil is well diluted. Spray the solution generously on the mold-affected areas in your shower, making sure to cover all affected surfaces. Let the solution sit for at least 30 minutes so the oil’s antifungal properties can penetrate and break down the mold.
