Are you tired of the (color of your) current garden tiles, or do they no longer look their best? Then it might be worth considering giving them a new lease on life by painting them. But is that actually possible? And if so, how do you go about it?
Can Garden Tiles Be Painted?
In most cases, garden tiles can be painted, but the results can vary. If you’re looking for a temporary solution, it can definitely be an option. The downside of painting garden tiles is that the result isn’t always great — and more importantly, it often doesn’t last very long. This is because the new layer of paint is subject to a lot of wear and tear, and weather conditions can negatively affect it. In the case of porous tiles, moisture can also become a problem. When moisture gets into the tile from below, it can no longer evaporate through the top, which can cause the paint to blister or peel.
How to Paint Garden Tiles
If you decide to paint your garden tiles, the first step is cleaning them thoroughly. If the tiles are suitable for it, you can use a pressure washer. Otherwise, a stiff broom and warm water will do. You’ll find more cleaning tips in this article, especially for ceramic tiles — even for removing grease or rust stains.
Next, repair any scratches or deeper damage. Fill them in with a filler to ensure the surface is even before painting. After that, it’s important to apply a primer or sand the tiles so the paint adheres better. The type of paint you choose is crucial. Concrete tiles, for example, are not ideal for outdoor use with regular concrete paint. In some cases, road marking paint is recommended because it’s more resistant to wear. For ceramic tiles, a different treatment and type of paint are required. Applying a protective coating afterward is often advised.
Advantages of Painting Garden Tiles
It’s a cheaper solution than replacing the tiles entirely.
