Lymph nodes in the neck: how is the diagnosis made?

Only a doctor is qualified to diagnose the origin and cause of one or more inflamed lymph nodes in the neck. To do this, the practitioner will begin their investigation by questioning the patient about their symptoms. Then, they will proceed with a clinical examination by carefully palpating the cervical region to detect the presence of submental lymph nodes, submandibular lymph nodes, supraclavicular lymph nodes, and jugular lymph nodes.

This step is essential to determine the size, location, sensitivity, and mobility of the inflamed lymph nodes in the neck. If deemed necessary, the doctor may recommend a lymph node biopsy to analyze its nature.

Swollen lymph nodes in the neck: how to treat them?

Since lymphadenopathy is secondary to a condition that can be of several types, only treating the underlying cause will stop it. Depending on its type, it may be treated with antibiotic therapy in some cases. In other cases, administering analgesic medications will help relieve the pain until recovery. In cases of cervical lymphadenopathy caused by cancer, radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be recommended, while surgical drainage will be considered if the abscess is too large.
