Banish Mattress Stains: A Parent’s Simple Cleaning Hack

Parenting is a mix of magic and messes, and if you have young kids, you’ve likely faced urine stains on a mattress. Katelyn Fagan, a mom of four, dealt with this even after her daughter was potty trained. Nighttime accidents left her mattress stained and smelling bad, even with a protector. Instead of buying a new one or putting up with the odor, Katelyn crafted a homemade cleaning solution that’s a lifesaver for parents. You’ll need a spray bottle, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, dish soap, and optional lavender oil.

Mix 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide, 3 tablespoons of baking soda, and a drop of dish soap in a the spray bottle. Add a drop of lavender oil for a fresh scent if you like. Swirl the bottle gently to mix—don’t shake, or it might fizz. Spray the mix generously on stained or smelly spots. The solution targets uric acid in urine, which causes stains and odors. Let the mattress air dry for about an hour, depending on your room’s airflow and humidity.
