The Egg Date You’ve Been Overlooking
After years in grocery stores, I’ve noticed most people grab eggs without checking this critical detail—and it could affect freshness, safety, and even baking results!
🔎 The Hidden Code: “Packed On” vs. “Expiration” Dates
“Packed On” Date (Julian Code)
A 3-digit number stamped on the carton (e.g., *”001″ = January 1st*, *”365″ = December 31st*).
Eggs are freshest within 30 days of this date.
“Sell-By” or “Expiration” Date
Often mistaken as the freshness marker, but eggs can still be good 3–5 weeks past this date if refrigerated properly.
🥚 Freshness Test (No Dates Needed!)
