The Hidden Refrigerator Setting That Can Help You Save on Electricity Bills

Most households rely on refrigerators to store food safely, yet few people realize that these appliances can significantly impact monthly electricity costs. What many don’t know is that a simple adjustment to the refrigerator’s temperature control button can make a noticeable difference in energy consumption.

How the Temperature Control Works

Inside every refrigerator, there is a thermostat or control knob, usually numbered from 1 to 7 (or labeled from Min to Max). This setting regulates how much energy the refrigerator uses to keep food cold. The higher the number, the colder the temperature — but also the harder the appliance has to work, consuming more electricity.

The Ideal Setting for Energy Savings

Many people set their refrigerator to the maximum level, assuming it will keep food fresher for longer. In reality, keeping it at the highest setting is unnecessary and wasteful. Experts recommend:

  • Refrigerator section: Between 3°C and 5°C (37°F – 41°F)

  • Freezer section: Around -18°C (0°F)

For most refrigerators, setting the control knob around 3 or 4 is usually sufficient. This balance ensures food safety while reducing the energy load.
