A greedy brother inherits a house and mocks his younger sister, who receives only five rusty old clocks from her deceased grandmother. They had no idea what was hidden inside these timepieces.
“Oh, so Grandma called you too?! I thought you’d be busy at the library… like a real bookworm!” Brian, 26, teased his younger sister, Linda, 19.
She just got out of the taxi. Fear filled her eyes while her heart told her: “Nothing will happen to Grandma. She’ll be fine. She’ll live another hundred years.”
Brian and Linda came to visit their 90-year-old grandmother Marlene. She had urgently requested to see her.
“My darlings, I want to see you one more time. I might not get the chance,” Marlene had painfully told them on the phone two days ago.
When Linda entered her grandmother’s room, she coughed because she noticed it was quite dusty. Marlene was too old and ill to do everything herself. She hadn’t swept the floor, and Linda noticed that the ceiling was moldy from a leak.

Until a year ago, Linda lived with Marlene. She cared for her and helped her a lot. She was even willing to turn down a life-changing scholarship, but at Marlene’s insistence, she moved to the city to continue her studies.
Brian entered the room, coughing and smiling. “Damn it… I’m allergic to dust! Grandma, didn’t you sweep and dust your room?”
He walked closer and saw that his grandmother was sick and thin. But he wasn’t worried and simply stood there, waiting to hear why she had called them.
Marlene looked Brian in the eye as she squeezed Linda’s trembling hands. The young girl was saddened to see that her grandmother was so pale and that her eyes no longer had the beautiful sparkle they once had. They seemed lifeless.
Marlene smiled, quietly stood up, and retrieved two envelopes from under her pillow. “My darlings, this is for you,” she said. “Please use it wisely. I called to give it to you.”
Brian and Linda opened the envelopes and found a stack of $5,000 inside each.
Linda couldn’t hold back her tears and ran away, crying.
Meanwhile, Brian frowned. “Just this? I thought you had more to offer. Well, I have to go now.” He turned to Marlene and left without even thanking her.
The next day, Marlene had a surprise.
“Hello, Grandma!” Marlene heard Linda from her room. She didn’t expect her to return.
She woke up when the girl opened the curtains and beams of light filtered through the dark, dusty room.
She was surprised to see Linda. She thought the girl had gone to the city where she was studying and working as a part-time librarian.
Linda walked over to Marlene with the envelope she had given her the day before.
I added the $4,000 I’d saved over the past year. Grandma, remember you telling me about your failing eyesight? I have $9,000 now. Now we can pay for your eye surgery.
Marlene got up from her bed. She hugged Linda, tears streaming down her face. “I knew you better, darling! But it’s too late for the operation. I feel my death approaching. I don’t want to waste this money if it could be used for something better.”
Linda wiped Marlene’s tears and said she wanted to come live with her.
