“I saw my boss, Michael, out with his wife. Since he’d told me just the day before that he was going to become a father, I approached with a smile and congratulated her.”

Her face drained of color. The usual clinking of glasses and soft chatter faded into an uneasy stillness.

Michael reached out, gripping my arm gently but firmly. His eyes darted between his wife and me, tension tightening his jaw. Leaning in, he whispered quietly, “She’s not…” I held my breath as the ambient noise crept back slowly.

I stood there, stunned by the weight of my misplaced certainty. His wife managed a faint, bittersweet smile, eyes shimmering yet composed. I muttered an awkward apology, “I’m sorry—I jumped to conclusions.”

We lingered in silence, thick with unspoken emotions. Then Michael’s voice softened, “Thank you for your kindness. It came from a good place, and I know you meant well.”

Walking away, the encounter stayed with me—how easily goodwill can brush against hidden sorrows, and how crucial it is to approach life’s private stories with gentle care.
