“A year ago, I was sentenced to death for a crime I didn’t commit,” Sara began in a firm, strong voice. “I was saved by the love of a dog who never stopped believing in my innocence.” Among the crowd were families who had received help from the foundation, lawyers working on wrongful conviction cases, and animal lovers who understood the special bond between humans and their pets. The legal clinic offered free services to anyone who couldn’t afford proper representation in the court system. Sara looked at Max, who was now considered one of the most famous dogs in the United States. She had received thousands of letters from people around the world, thanking him for his loyalty and courage.
People ask me if I’m angry about what happened, Sara said. The truth is, I’ve learned that holding on to a grudge only hurts yourself. Instead, I’ve decided to focus on making sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else again. Director Crawford attended the ceremony along with Dr. Thompson and Rebeca. Even some of the FBI agents who had helped solve the case came to show their support.
After the ceremony, Sara walked with Max through the sanctuary grounds. Dozens of rescued dogs played in the yards, many of them looking for new homes with loving families. “You know what, Max?” Sara said, kneeling down to hug her faithful companion. “I think we’ve done a good thing with our second chance.” Max wagged his tail and licked her face, just as he had during the darkest moments in the prison visiting room. The sun was setting over the sanctuary as Sara and Max walked home together, two survivors who had proven that love and truth are stronger than any lie or conspiracy.
