The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2025 lists pollution among the top ten global threats for the next decade. Plastics are identified as a major contributor, with microplastics making up an estimated 90% of all plastic on the ocean’s surface. The WEF has called on governments worldwide to take urgent, coordinated action to address the issue.

Similarly, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Republic of Korea have joined forces for World Environment Day 2025, rallying global action to end plastic pollution.

How Do Microplastics Harm Me and My Family?
Microplastics pose three key types of hazards: physical, chemical, and microbial. Without realising it, you may be ingesting plastic fragments, harmful chemicals, and even microbes.

Although the long-term health effects of consuming microplastics are still being studied, recent research suggests potential links to heart attack, stroke, inflammation, and other non-communicable diseases. While much remains uncertain, one thing is clear: it’s best to take precautions and minimise exposure to microplastics wherever possible.
