This disease, caused by a microscopic mite called Sarcoptes scabiei, is mainly transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact. Contrary to popular belief, it is not linked to a lack of hygiene, but it is more easily spread in environments where promiscuity is important, such as crèches and schools.
